I teach high school math to 9th through 12th graders in a large specialized public high school for the arts with many students from high-need families.

Graphing calculators are very expensive — over $100 each — and in our school where many students receive free lunches and work jobs after school and on the weekends to support their family, this is impossible financially. At the same time, graphing calculators are now REQUIRED for the standardized state exams. Yet the state does not provide us with any financial resources or calculators for the thousands of students in our school. In this time of financial difficulty for everyone, and severe budget cuts for our school, this has been a severe burden on us as teachers and on parents.

Not only will these calculators help students on the standardized exams, but they really help facilitate learning — some lessons in which tedious computation and graphing takes up the majority of the time to do by hand, the calculators do in seconds. Math is traditionally a difficult subject for most students in our school, but they light up and get excited about learning math once they see how quickly and easily things can be done on the calculator. Plus, the students are learning technology in the classroom, which is essential for preparing for college.

The best part about these calculators is that they will belong to the school, so after these students graduate, other students after them will be able to use them. It's a gift that really will keep on giving. Our students are bright, motivated, and successful, but come from families who cannot afford all the resources required of them. They would be so grateful for your help and generosity!
