This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Whenever you think of students that can benefit most of understanding how technology can enhance educational experience, then you might be describing students I serve. They are active members in their communities. They also are recognizing that technology really does affect how they learn.

Many of the students I teach have parents that struggle to make ends meet.

They therefore cannot afford to purchase luxuries such as graphing calculators. Whenever we make connections in our math class they marvel at how applicable a graphing calculator is in determining solutions. These students are then the most deserving of a chance to see how important an education is.

My Project

If ever you come across a set of math teachers, whether at a common planning meeting or a bar during happy hour, bring up the conversation of calculators and watch the sparks fly. The arguments for and against calculators are many. One side argues for the use of efficient and available technology in the classroom, while the other side argues for numeracy and fluency to the highest order. In other words, are you old school or new school? A graphing calculator is a learning tool designed to help students visualize and better understand concepts in mathematics.

As they gain a deeper understanding of the material, students acquire the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to attain greater academic success.

The use of graphing calculators helps improve the mathematical skills of students and their attitudes toward mathematics. A graphing calculator can help students build the skill sets to perform better in mathematics. It challenges students to work out mathematical problems by visualizing them. When students can see expressions, formulas and graphs on screen, they are able to explore concepts and make connections that lead to a deeper understanding.

A graphing calculator is not simply an investment in technology, but in student achievement.
