We are a public, all-girls, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) middle and high school in Los Angeles, California. We opened in 2016 with grades 6 and 9, and grow a grade per year to eventually become a full SPAN (grades 6-12) school by the 2019-20 school year.
Our students come from 79 zip codes throughout Los Angeles, and over half receive free or reduced lunch.
Did you know that girls within Los Angeles Unified School District perform at the same level or above their male peers in math and science while in elementary school? And yet, their scores on standardized tests in math and science decline as they progress through middle and high school. Not only that, as students move through school fewer girls take STEM classes than boys.
Our school is here to change that and our girls need your help! We welcome all girls within the school district who are committed to a highly rigorous, college preparatory curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
My Project
This year I am teaching Algebra 2 (9th, 10th, & 11th), 7th Grade Accelerated Math, and Mathletes for 6th Grade. We currently only have 10 graphing calculators to share between me and another teacher who needs to use them all the time. The content of the CPM Core Connections Algebra 2 course requires for students to use graphing calculators. The Accelerated 7th Graders are on track to be in Calculus by senior year and they too need to use graphing calculators to interact with the curriculum.
Our girls need to get acclimated with graphing calculators in order to prepare for the ACT, SAT, AP Calculus Exam, and other standardized tests that will impact their education and career choices.
Ours girls have a rigorous STEM course load and being able to utilize a graphing calculator and all of it's functions is going to be vital for their success. We've also chosen the rechargeable calculators because they use less material and don't require batteries so that we can work towards reducing our carbon footprint. We really need 40 calculators, but acquiring 10 more would be an amazing start.
