Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is inspired by my student's requests for more mangas, graphic novels, and children's books. As an educator it is very hard to tell students that I cannot afford to buy the books they want to read (especially when they went from never wanting to touch a book to ASKING me for more books to read!). With this project I will not only be able to fulfill their reading requests but also continue to expand my classroom library.

Some may think that these types of books are too "low leveled" for high school students, however, I believe that as long as students are reading they are practicing and sharpening their reading skills.

Reading does not always have to be done for a class assignment or a project; it can also be done for entertainment, to obtain inspiration, to explore different worlds/ places without having to physically move, and sometimes to reduce stress and obtain a break from the real world. As students are adjusting to the transitions between online learning and being back in the classroom, being able to have that mental break by reading a comic or a manga is sometimes necessary to boost their brain power. After all, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
