Help Ms. Cole

I teach a group of middle school students that fall on the spectrum of autism. My students struggle to understand verbal cues, but quickly internalize and memorize anything that is shown to them in a visual way.

"Ms. C... stop talking! SHOW me what you want me to do!" This was a revelation that came to me by way of one of my students this year. It was after he said this to me that I realized I needed to cut the words that are spoken in class in half and create way more visual models for my students to look at. This includes reading. My students can often read a sentence three or four times and still have no idea what the sentence says until it is drawn for them.

Graphic novels are a newer resource designed with students like mine in mind. They contain all of the words, and all of the plot, of a regular novel, but they are highly visual. We have two graphic novels in my classroom right now, and my students play rock-paper-scissors to compete for who gets to read them each day. My students need graphic novels to help push them forward in reading.
