Graphic Novels to Tackle a Challenging Topic: the Holocaust
Help me give my students graphic novels about the Holocaust and other genocides (including in Spanish) to support their curiosity, learn the truth, and improve their reading skills while grappling with this important unit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students (and their teacher!) love graphic novels. No matter a student’s reading level, these books hook students on moving, personal stories, make challenging topics feel more accessible, and often have surprisingly sophisticated, teachable narrative structures. In my classroom library, graphic novels are by far the most frequently checked out books, not only by students in my classes, but kids who migrate to my room from across the school to check out books.
These graphic novels about the Holocaust, and other genocides, will be snapped up by interested students who are insatiably curious about the topic and desperately need accurate information.
Our third quarter unit in eighth grade English is all about the Holocaust, centered around the “Diary of Anne Frank,” and providing eager students supplemental, accessible reading has been a huge gap in the two years since our school first launched this unit.
These books will be used by ALL eighth graders at our school: two copies of each book are part of this request so that our other core eighth grade English teacher can also have copies available in her classroom. Spanish-language texts can be used by our newcomers. And I’m fully committed to the success of this project: this past summer I attended the four-day California Teachers Collaborative for Holocaust and Genocide Education summer institute at USC and attended a session focused on teaching with graphic novels. I continue to meet monthly with a cohort of educators focused on integrating the lessons and resources from the institute into our classrooms.
By supporting this project, you’ll not only be advancing student literacy and reading levels, you’ll be nurturing the truth in a time of disinformation.
