My Project

My students come from a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, languages, cities, countries, and families. They have experienced different things, learn at different paces, and are beautifully individualistic in our community-based room. I try to emphasize reading as a class, but individual love of reading is essential to the culture we build in our Language Arts classroom!

My library is 75% community funded and 100% community read.

Our class library allows our students to read things they LOVE, which is the best part of teaching Language Arts! Students are required to complete a passion project each quarter in which they research a topic they love, read a fiction source about the topic, and then supplement their research material with fictional stories and lived experiences. These graphic novels will be that fiction source in their passion projects, and encourage my students who might not have english as their first language, might struggle with reading at a higher level, or might have problems with reading attention for longer periods, to access literature in a way that works for them... and is FUN without embarrassment.

Additionally, my students check out graphic novels at 5 times the rate of written novels. In the first quarter of school, graphic novels were checked out 57 times. I only had 4 written novels checked out the entire quarter. Students are more willing to read graphic novels, and they ENJOY them. This means my students read more (which is always a win).
