Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach co-taught Language Arts and Reading to a passionate group of 8th grade students. This means I work with a special education teacher to support each of our student's needs and learning styles. The majority of our students come from low-income households, speak English as a second language, and read far below grade level (many of whom have learning disabilities or IEPs). Hence, our students often lack confidence within themselves when they walk into the classroom at the beginning of the year. With the support of my co-teacher, we work hard to not only establish a safe, welcoming, and silly space for our students to grow, but we also work tirelessly to find engaging and relevant material for our students to find the joy in reading or writing.

Our students truly begin to let their guard down and find their voice when given a book relevant to their own lives and interests.

My Project

Each school year, my students ask me the same question: can we add more graphic novels to the classroom library? My biggest goal this year is to help my students find a book they love and establish a culture of independent reading in our class. Reading at least 20 minutes a day not only yields greater gains in reading abilities, but also increases students' success in high school and beyond! I firmly believe that everyone can find a joy in reading and get lost in a story--you just need to find the right book! Bringing in some of the newest, most captivating graphic novels and young adult novels will help our students get excited about reading and give them a larger variety to explore their own interests. Our students with learning disabilities or struggling readers will be able to find a book that is both interesting and accessible to them! I aspire for our students to dive deep into their books in class, and hopefully fuel that interest outside of the classroom.
