Graphic Novels to Guide Social Growth

Help me give my students book club books that cover social emotional topics they must face as preteens. These graphic novels will surely lead to great discussions about topics that they will encounter either first or second hand.

My Students

This year my class is a group of high ability fourth graders. Located in Muncie, Indiana, our students come from varying socioeconomic and personal backgrounds with nearly sixty percent on reduced-price or free lunch. Our school is diverse, as it includes gifted enriched learning, special education and ABA rooms, preschool, and general education programs. Students from outside of our district can travel to our school to be involved in these special education and gifted programs throughout the year.

My students are striving to find their voices and personalities in the world.

I want to support them on that journey in all ways possible including academic, athletic, and social maturity.

Our school provides gifted art and music classes, as well as enrichment success periods throughout the day. There are various clubs and organizations for students to take part in and a phenomenal staff who support each other.

My Project

We do book clubs in my classroom. These graphic novels will add to the books we already have as choices in my room. They cover topics that all students need to face.

My fourth graders are learning what it means to be themselves and how to be the unique person they are meant to be.

These books address those topics and will lead to intentional discussions. I look forward to hearing their perspectives on the characters’ experiences and how those connect to their own lives. Please help me reach students in a text structure in which they love to read.
