My Project

My 8th-grade students are learning to love reading just like their teacher! One of my students even proudly wears a t-shirt that says: Reading is My Favorite Sport. Many of my students have expressed interest in graphic novels and I want them to have them at their fingertips in our classroom library! The few graphic novels that I do have are always in the hands of a reader and are becoming worn out!

I want to start a graphic novels book club so that my budding book lovers can read and chat about their books!

I see my students gathered around their table of desks with colorful graphic novels in hand, flipping through books to find evidence of how the characters are developing, pointing out points in the plot where the tension is building, and debating over who is the better character!

Graphic novels are a good choice for our struggling readers - many of my students are reading 2+ grade levels below and are also (English Language Learners) ELLs/MLLs (Multi-lingual Learners). These non-traditional books give all of our readers the opportunity to read novels with less text than traditional books which makes them less overwhelming.
