Graphic Novels to Explore Injustice for Our Youth

Help me give my students paper copies of the graphic novel "They Called Us Enemy" by George Takei to explore injustice through a variety of media.

My Project

Students will use the graphic novel to focus on determining the central idea of a text through informational texts. Students these days are very hands-on and visual learners.

The book highlights a topic in history that has not had much light shed on until recent years.

Through the lens of George Takei we can explore an individual's experience with injustice in society that stands for justice. Students will have other informational texts paired with the unit to understand the historical and social context of the topic, but they will also explore areas of activism. The goal of the unit is for students to be able to explore a variety of informational media to:

A) determine its central idea (how we comprehend a text),

B) understand a variety of perspectives on a topic, and

C) explore their own areas in which they seek to take a stance.

Students will create their own "activism" graphic novel where they take a stance on a topic near to them much like George Takei did in his novel.
