My students are a group of kids from diverse backgrounds in a large urban middle school. More than 80% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and face economic hardships at home. Their families are not always able to provide the supplies they need for school.
Despite the many obstacles they face, my students are hard-working and determined to learn as much as they can, graduate high school, and head to college.
They come to my classroom (or join virtually) smiling and excited to be there, and they work hard in class and at home.
My Project
We are planning to set up a "bookstore" at the end of the school year where each student will get to come with their class and pick out a book to read over the summer. We are looking for a variety of titles that will appeal to a variety of students. Many middle grades students love graphic novels and for struggling readers sometimes the visual clues and picture supports are very important.
Help our students find graphic novels they love that will open the world of reading to them and inspire them to read more.
