My Students

Do you remember what fun you had reading comic books? They may have a new name, Graphic Novels, but students still enjoy reading books in comic book format.

We are a charter school in Central Texas.

Our students love to read, but our library collection, particularly the fiction section, is rather dated, with an average publish date in the 1980s. Many of our students come from economically challenged homes and have few books in their homes. For many, the school library is their only access to books.

My Project

Graphic novels give students a fresh approach to reading. They are fun to read. With graphic novels, reading is not a chore, but an enjoyable activity. Our school currently owns only three graphic novels, which are always checked out. Students constantly ask me to "get some more books like this." Series like Babymouse will be popular with all students, but are particularly good for beginner readers and those transitioning from picture books to chapter books. Sherlock Holmes reinvented in graphic format may inspire students to read the original. Jeff Smith's "Bone" series has been given starred reviews and endorsements. These and the other books requested are guaranteed to be popular with my students.

A library is a living organism.

A library with nothing but "good literature" that no one wants to read is a dying thing. A library that has unattractive books can't inspire children to read. A library that doesn't keep up with what is current won't interest today's students. Please help me keep our library alive with new and exciting books that students will clamor to read.
