Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have incredible, enthusiastic young people who truly need support at school to be successful and do their best! Our school believes deeply in teaching the whole child and the classroom is the first step for our kids to learn about the larger world.

Our kids are amazing, creative and motivated young people who are really excited about learning!

We live in a high-needs New York community where a larger percentage of our school's population are English learners and considered "economically disadvantaged." In spite of the obstacles in their lives outside of school, my students are always eager to learn and I strive to create an environment in which success through continued education becomes achievable.

My Project

My students need quality graphic novels to motivate them to read on their own.

If you visit our classroom on any given day, you will find students all over our room reading books for pleasure, while some kids spend time struggling to find the books they like.

Providing students with reading options in an organized library is one of the most powerful tools that I can give to get them excited about independent reading time while giving them high-quality stories.

These graphic novels capture students' interest and draw them into the world of reading. Many of these graphic novels are based on books I have in my classroom. With choices like these, students who struggle will be drawn to chapter books as well, and that our silent reading time will become a joyful time for them.
