My Students

Our community is a mix of rural and suburban students representing a growing number of diverse cultures.

My students are resourceful, clever, and enthusiastic readers.

They love graphic novels and I love to see them reading for enjoyment. Currently, graphic novels are allotted two shelves in our library but they are checked out so often those two shelves remain mostly empty.

My Project

This is my first year in our Media Center and I would like to fill our library with books that will be exciting and support even my lowest level reader. One of the first things I noticed this year is that we do not have many books for our English language learners and reluctant readers. When you are in middle school, your peers’ opinion is everything and you don’t want to be seen reading a book that others feel is for elementary. Graphic novels are a perfect choice because all of our students love them! Besides just being fun to read, graphic novels help with comprehension and give students the confidence to complete an interesting book that could be daunting in chapter-book form. My hope is these graphic novels will draw my kids towards the printed material, almost like a video game, and improve their vocabulary as well as their reading skills.

The books I do have are great for my more experienced readers, but the addition of graphic novels would help me reach ALL of my students.

We are lacking in the graphic novel section and we only have about 100 novels. They make reading more enjoyable and open the door for that student who has a history of hating to read and makes them want to read again and again.
