My Students

I teach a diverse and energetic group of 8th graders who thrive on engaging, visual, hands-on and meaningful learning activities. They love sharing their ideas, telling good jokes, and collaborating with each other. They work hard when they know their work has a purpose, and they thrive with positive reinforcement. They love games, movies, action, and drama. One thing they have not always loved: reading. I know, however, that this 8th grade year is perhaps the last opportunity they will have to be encouraged to read for fun, so it is my driving passion to find the right book for each student. Research shows that reading widely and often is one of the best ways to improve vocabulary and writing skills.

Imagine watching a lively, loud group of students rush into your classroom, and you hear someone shout, "Do we get to read our books today?" They grab their books off the shelf, and in the blink of an eye, every last one of them has their nose in a book, devouring the story in front of them.

This has been my experience this year, thanks to the magic of graphic novels.

My Project

These days, the 8th graders I teach are immersed in social media and screens -- most of them tell me they don't read much at all. Yet I know that reading daily and reading for enjoyment are crucial in their development as writers and critical thinkers. For this reason, I've challenged my students to read at least 20 books of their choosing each year, and we have book talks, reading time, and contests to see which class can read the most books. Still, there are always reluctant readers who struggle to stick with a book.

Enter the magic of graphic novels!

Over and over, my most reluctant readers are drawn to the engaging format of graphic novels. However, I only have a few to share with them. With this project, I'll be able to provide my 8th graders with exciting adventures like the Bone series, teen drama they can relate to, and inspiring biographies.

When students get hooked on books and add to their list of the books they've finished reading, I watch their confidence and pride grow. These books will have a lasting impact on students as they start to seem themselves as capable readers and thinkers.
