Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a multiple disabilities/ language learning disability self contained high school class. I have 12 students of mixed grade level. I teach my students Math, English, Science and History as well as an Adaptive Learning period where we focus on life skills such as counting money, reading schedule and recipes, writing emails, making phone calls, etc.

My Project

I teach a self contained Multiple Disabilities high school class (mixed grade level). The average reading level of my students is 3rd grade. Though very different individuals, one thing my students all have in common is that they are hyper-aware of their disabilities due to being socially typical high schoolers. This makes it difficult to find appropriate reading materials. Students want to read grade-level appropriate topics however, their reading level is much lower than that of their neurotypical peers. They do not want to read "baby" books!

In order to spark my students' interest in reading, I am asking for funding for class sets of 3 different graphic novels; this will get us through the duration of the school year.

I chose three novels that most children read in school at some point in their educational career as I want my students to experience things their peers are experiencing.
