My Students

Year after year, my school creates passionate, fluent, lifelong readers and writers. I teach three sections of sixth grade ELA in a diverse community in Brooklyn, NY. My classroom is a mix of English Language Learners, students with special needs and general education students. My students work hard and they love to learn and succeed.

In sixth grade, we tackle complex fiction and non-fiction texts - reading, analyzing, debating, annotating, and responding in conversation and in writing.

Sixth graders are eager to discuss and debate current events, social justice issues, and the world around them.

My Project

I am requesting graphic novels to spice up their reading lives! Graphic novels are the most popular genre in my library, without a doubt. These texts can be great for our students who are English language learners, kids who need picture support in order to aid in comprehension, and reluctant readers. But since they are so popular, graphic novels often go home with kids and never return to school!

This means more books in students homes but empty book bins in my classroom.

We need some fresh titles for kids to dive into so they will look forward to independent reading at school and at home.
