This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students love to read! Especially our middle school students. Unfortunately, we do not have enough middle school fiction novels to go around. Graphic novels are of great interest to pre-teen readers and in turn are a perfect choice for reluctant readers.
Our students live in an urban community.
Most students are being raised in single family homes and qualify to receive a free lunch. Despite the obstacles our students may have, they are excited to broaden their horizons, learn about the world around them and are excited to prepare for their future in work and education.
My Project
Our school was originally a K-5 school. We have a wonderful library with a great collection of books for the elementary age group. We recently added grades 6-8 and unfortunately, the library collection was not able to keep up with the changes. Our students love to read. We are in need of fiction novels that are on the grade and interest level of pre-teens. Providing these books will allow our students to read novels and therefore increase their ability to learn and most importantly keep reading!
I get requests every day from students for books that they hear about and are interested in reading.
I would love to be able to have books that match their interests but currently I have very few to share with students. Providing these books for our students would fulfill a need of our middle school students.
