Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All teachers think their students are the most wonderful, amazing, fantastic kids on the planet, and I'll bet they are very nice, and have plenty of great qualities. However, I assure you beyond a doubt that MY students are unequivocally REALLY the greatest, the most talented, wonderful, hardest working kids that have ever lived.

I am lucky enough to come to work every day with a fantastically diverse, curious, spirited group of fourth graders who bring energy, joy, and a wide variety of life experiences into my life each morning.

We have focused extremely hard on reading this year, and the students have gone from reluctant to insatiable in just a few short months. They have worked hard and overcome many obstacles to get to where they are today, and are truly a joy to work with.

My Project

My students need high interest reading material to help them go from reluctant readers to lifelong learners. One of my main focuses throughout the year is increasing reading stamina. We spend at least 25 minutes each day doing what I call "active reading of great books." The students can move to a comfortable spot around the room; for some it's stretched out on the floor, for others, it's underneath their desk, and still others prefer to simply sit at their desk. Regardless of position, the task is the same; read- REALLY READ!- a book they are both actually interested in, and is at their reading level.

When kids have a graphic novel in front of them, they are able to fully enter the world they are reading about, so much so they often have difficulty returning to reality!

Many reluctant readers have difficulty picturing scenes from a book in their mind. Graphic novels help with this tremendously by supplying pictures along with the text. When students then choose books without graphics, they are able to transfer that skill, and create their own "graphic novel" in their mind, and ultimately increasing their ability to comprehend text. In addition to the academic benefit, graphic novels are enjoyable for kids! Providing graphic novels will enable me to hear cheers instead of groans when it is time for active reading.
