My Students

I teach at an engaged and diverse neighborhood school in the heart of the North End of Middletown, CT. Our school is truly a community school, with over 90% of our students walking to and from school each day. We are grateful to learn from the rich racial and cultural diversity of our students and their families. My fifth graders are creative, thoughtful, hard-working, and funny. They make me laugh every day.

Our school motto is "Knowledge is Power" and as the oldest students in the building, my students crave establishing that knowledge through their own curiosities; they are always asking questions.

We are a STEM-based school full of inquisitive minds who love to explore and learn more. Our school has two classrooms at each grade level K-5 as well as a pre-school, family resource center, and community health center within our building. Nearly 80% of our school is eligible for free and reduced-price lunch.

My Project

My students LOVE graphic novels. The visual supports help them to engage with the storyline and they are motivated by how quickly and thoroughly they can digest these novels. Once they finish one, they are looking for the next.

Graphic novels engage even my most reluctant readers.

I have heard adults call these "comic books," but they are really much more than that. They are complete stories that happen to include illustrations - and my kids love them! Graphic novels give visual learners the opportunity to connect with stories in ways they might not with traditional texts.

Especially because so many of these texts are series, the visual stories draw students in and get them invested in the characters and plot. Students voraciously tackle these texts and want to keep reading the series to get the full picture.
