My Students

My students come from various cultural and social backgrounds in a wonderfully beautiful neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.

They are a group of eager learners and readers, and share a strong love towards books.

We love to discuss complex topics, debate from different perspectives, and also build empathy through discussions and readings. Each student brings their own unique experience and knowledge into the classroom that further helps our classroom community to grow a better understanding of each other and the world.

My Project

Growing up, I enjoyed reading books and loved it. I didn't realize that this love could grow exponentially until I came upon graphic novels as a kid. My first graphic novel was Pride and Prejudice, and without the images, it would've been hard for me to understand certain details of the story had I read the book sans images. It shortened the gap that would've existed.

All students would benefit from reading graphic novels.

These books seem like easy reads from the surface, but in reality the dialogues, images, setting, and expressions altogether help the readers build their inference skills (without finding it boring, if they already do). It is great for readers who are more reluctant to grab books to read, and for readers who want to understand the fiction book they already read.

The books I accumulated are great fiction graphic novels that exist without the images in our library, or are strictly made as graphic novels. It is important that students access books in different mediums. The focus should be for students to find ways to love books-- graphic novels can be a way.
