My Students

I teach an amazing, spunky group of 4th graders! My students are kind, funny, amazing, young people who have the potential to learn and grow up successfully but lack the means necessary. They are hardworking and determined and just want to learn about the world they live in. Most of my students come from a high poverty neighborhood in the projects of NYC and receive free or reduced-price breakfast, lunch, and after school snacks. Many of my students are English Language Learners who have moved to NYC from different countries, where English is rarely spoken at home. I also work with students with learning disabilities.

The children in my class inspire me to not only be a better teacher but to be a better person every day.

Some of my students come from single-parent households, live with many family members in small living conditions, live in completely different states than their parents with a grandparent/grandparents, or live with an alternative guardian. Overall, my students deal with hardships that no child should have to live with. Although they may not be able to afford the everyday materials they need to be successful, they are amazing young people that deserve the world!

My Project

It is a big challenge to get hesitant readers reading independently in school and at home. When children can't find books that interest them, reading feels like a laborious chore that they do not want to do! However, with the help of new books and fun graphic novels, I have seen students come into my classroom in September who dread independent reading, and by June, they are reading machines! These graphic novels in my project can help promote literacy in students who have sever challenges with reading, as well as English Language Learners.

Graphic novels have changed the game in literacy for hesitant readers.

They can make independent reading fun, engaging, and not just "homework" they have to do every night. The appealing visual aspect of graphic novels draw in children and make them want to read. I am a special education teacher and a lot my students with learning disabilities find reading a typical chapter book very challenging and overall hard to finish. However, with graphic novels, the pictures and appealing fonts make them want to finish a book, which can feel like a big accomplishment to them and boost their confidence in reading. Graphic novels significantly benefit English Language Learners as well because the continuous graphics can help them comprehend better and overall encourage them to just pick up a book and read!
