My Students

Second grade has changed a lot over the years. The students are expected to achieve more than ever before. How can they do this without being provided the materials to do it?

My students are in a high poverty public school that is about 70% low income.

This is something that already puts some of them at a disadvantage. They are not all able to get extra materials at home to continue learning what has been introduced at school. For this reason, I want to be able to expose them to as many learning opportunities as possible! It is in my classroom where they get to take risks and open their minds to new learning experiences! I need your help to give them all of these experiences!

My Project

This project requests graphic novels for students to access in my classroom library. Graphic novels are high interest for students! They are written at varying reading levels and include bright pictures to look at while reading. They also cover many different topics so that they can reach the interests many different students!

Graphic novels can dramatically help improve reading for students struggling with language acquisition, including students with developmental disabilities, as the illustrations provide contextual clues that help foster comprehension.

Studies are showing the benefits of getting graphic novels into the hands of all students! The language structure, illustrations, and story help students to read and comprehend different text structures and enjoy it at the same time.
