My Students

We are a diamond in the rough. JHS 162 is located in the heart of the South Bronx and that is exactly what we have, 'HEART'. One could not imagine the struggles my students face on a daily basis. It is on a daily basis that many of my students most basic needs are not met. The walk to and from schools poses a challenge to many, but they come. We have over ninety-two percent attendance.

My children want to come to school.

Their eagerness is met with an equally dedicated teacher that in turn, will provide the education they so desperately need and even more, deserve.

My Project

My students are highly motivated readers who love to explore new texts. We have immersed ourselves in a variety of genres and we hope to read 25 books this year. After examining the books we have read so far this year, I have come to a startling conclusion. We have yet to include any graphic novels. As a child I loved to read graphic novels. I especially loved Maus. I teach many students to whom English is their second language. I believe that the images provided in a graphic novel will serve as a scaffold for those struggling readers. We are need of highly engaging texts to continue to foster this love of reading.
