Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students love a great story! However, many of my students are reluctant to pick up a great story to read. The majority of my students read a full grade or more below grade level. For many students, years of struggling with reading has deflated their confidence in reading.

Graphic novels, including the ones I have requested in this project, are engaging, culturally relevant, and have been the single biggest game-changers in my students' reading journey.

After adding just 3 graphic novels to my classroom library, students who said they hadn't read a book from start to finish in their whole lives were devouring graphic novels! Demand was so high, I began checking out entire shelves of graphic novels from the public library. My students were reading an average of 8 books a semester, and yes, including my "I hate reading" kids. Their reading comprehension scores on the last round of NWEA testing revealed they had grown an entire grade level! Even more, they began sharing recommendations with each other, requesting new titles from the library, and writing fan fiction!

Graphic novels offer students a whole new portal into the world of reading, one that will lead them to become confident, strong, and encouraged readers.
