This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to engage with graphic novels and comics in a more meaningful way!. "Comics are a gateway drug to literacy"- Art Spiegelman, Author and Artist of Pulitzer Prize-Winning Graphic Novel, Maus.

Quality comic books, manga, and graphic novels open new worlds to my students and allow them all to access reading in more meaningful way.

This year, I will be starting the Graphic Novel Club of about 15 students. At our school, we value the importance of student literacy and provide students with multiple access points to improve their reading level. Last year, most students were able to grow at least two years in reading!

My Project

Students will learn how to create their own comics by reading the "Stormbreaker" graphic novel. We will learn all about character development, setting, and creating a plot through conversation. Next, students will spend the rest of the year drafting their own comic book/graphic novel using the Make Your Own Comic book kits, colored pencils, and "Draw Comics the Marvel Way" book.

Students cannot simply look at the pictures to determine what is happening in "Stormbreaker." I chose this book because many of the students love the Alex Rider novels, and I hope to peak the interest of the lower-level readers.

I would much rather have my students pick up a graphic novel than pick up no book at all!
