Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach U.S. History at a public high school that reflects the diversity of New York City. My students are thoughtful, curious, and opinionated, and are always ready to ask deeply important and insightful questions about the country we live in.

My students are also passionate activists and future leaders.

Most of them are students of color from low-income families who bring their lived experiences to the topics we study. They look forward to taking active roles in their communities and their country, and I am lucky to support them in this learning.

My Project

Immigration is the topic that most captures my students' interests in studying American history. Most come from immigrant families and have many questions about the ways they see immigrants portrayed on the news and in our political landscape. For this reason we will be using immigration as a lens to understand American history this fall. My goal in this project is to offer them the opportunity to engage with many different groups' experiences of immigration, rooted in the past and the present, to bring context and humanity to this difficult topic.

Graphic novels and memoirs help increase my students' literacy, and bring the voices they are reading to life.

The format of graphic novels is engaging and helps build a love of reading and a love of learning, even for previously reluctant or struggling readers. My students often tell me at the end of the year that the graphic texts we have used were the most memorable for them. This library of texts will create points of entry for students at various reading levels, and will allow my students choice in what they read. I am confident that these texts will help my students grow as readers, thinkers, and students of history.
