My Students

My classroom big group area needs a makeover! My goal is to design and provide the most creative learning space I can to encourage my little learners! I want to engage them by creating life size graphs and math visuals by using a creative large learning rug with geometric blocks for counting.

I teach kindergarten in an elementary school in central Alabama.

Over half of our students receive free/reduced lunch and many live in poverty. Many students live in single parent homes and many parents do not have a college education. Students come to kindergarten from a wide variety of preschool experiences ranging from high quality experiences to no school experiences at all. The range of readiness knowledge in a typical kindergarten class in my school is wide. Some children can read simple words and communicate very well. Others do not know any letters or numbers and do not understand rhyme. It is a challenge to differentiate instruction when the foundational knowledge of students is so diverse. Successful strategies include tactile and holistic approaches like "kid graphing," math visuals and organizing information with a graphic organizer. My goal is to improve my big group learning area by engaging students in fun and active activities.

My Project

The classroom rug will serve several purposes. First, it will provide a visual location to organize information. The rug I selected has 20 color blocks. Graphing activities like, "Which color do you like best?" can be created with the children standing on the squares and then writing about the graph that is created. Another way I will use the rug for organizing information is when we discuss coding. We will use "Dash and Dot" robots that teach young children beginning coding strategies. We will also use the rug for patterning, sorting and counting activities. Second, the rug will be used for whole group instruction in other areas in addition to mathematics. Listening to a story, recognizing colors, following directions, counting syllables and many other language arts activities will be developed using the organization of the rug.

Children that come from poverty homes deserve a well-organized, updated and attractive classroom that encourages learning.

The classroom rug that I selected will absolutely change the look of my classroom for the better. Currently, I have a small rug (I replace it every 2 years). It is a solid color and not interesting. All of the children do not fit on the rug when I teach a whole group lesson. The addition of this beautiful rug will provide many opportunities for my kids!
