Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Grammar"--the dread of students, the bane of teachers. This is my thirteenth year teaching English, my fifth at high school, and my low-income urban sophomores are proving to be no different than any of the other two thousand plus students I've taught: grammar doesn't excite them, but they're in desperate need of improvement. Each year my colleagues and I bemoan the problem, each year we look to try something that will produce lasting results, and each year we seem to end up where we started, lamenting the fragments and run-ons and myriad other mistakes that still appear in student writing. But it wasn't always so. Years ago, when I taught junior high, I came across a grammar resource that promised to be, if nothing else, entertaining. A soap opera style story, told just a few sentences at a time, with various mistakes for students to correct; this was the old "daily oral language," but with a twist. And sure enough, students were hooked by the story line. And they loved the challenge of trying not to get "caught." Even more, though, my students were really learning grammar--and remembering it! What was this magical program? Jane Bell Kiester's "Caught'Ya: Grammar with a Giggle." I want to bring that success (and fun) to my classroom, for my students. Even more, I want to bring it to my colleagues' classrooms and students. At the start of this year, when we had our curriculum planning session, I told my coworkers about Caught Ya's. I told them of the fun and the success, and they were excited. Our goal is to implement the program in all 9th and 10th grade English classes. And that's where you come in. Having two copies of each of the "Caught Ya" books will provide the set of resources we need to offer this grammar help to the full-range of students we teach at my school. From the below grade level students who really struggle with writing to the honors students who need to polish theirs, the multiple story lines in these books will provide fun, effective, lasting grammar assistance and help improve the quality of student writing. I know this can work. Your help can make it happen. Thank you.
