My Students

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." -€Â"Jacqueline Kennedy Many of my students have not found the love of books. They need the right texts to help them fall in love with reading.

I have over 60 sixth graders who attend an urban middle school in a high-poverty neighborhood.

Half of these students are English Language learners who have been in school in the U.S. since kindergarten. They are falling further and further behind their peers.

My Project

In order to improve reading achievement, students need to spend more time actually reading. Unfortunately, my students have limited resources and lack the skills to read many grade-level texts. The use of graphic novels can increase student reading time and increase their enjoyment of reading.

By providing my students with titles that will hook them into reading, they can get on the road to becoming proficient readers.
