Each day the second graders in my class have the opportunity to extend their math learning experience. With limited resources for individual use, these students are being held back from being able to fully challenge themselves.
I work in a Title 1 school with a student population consisting predominantly with minority students.
Most students that attend this school come from low income families. Receiving a good education is what most of these students need to save them from taking the wrong path that so many of the citizens in their neighborhood have. Our school doesn't have the money or resources to provide enough supplies for hands-on learning to occur in the classroom. My class is made up of 19 eager, motivated, and excited learners. Each student loves coming to school every day and are always ready to learn.
My Project
My students need more hands-on math supplies to further their math education. When students finish assignments they work on math centers. My goal is to have a grab and go math center for each student that consists of all the supplies they need. As of right now there are not enough math resources to allow each child the opportunity to extend their learning. Addition and subtraction flashcards are very important for students in second grade. Flashcards that have students critically thinking about what number goes in the blank challenges them even more. Dice are a great way to do simple addition and subtraction. They can also be used to compare one digit numbers. Double dice are good for students who need more of a challenge. They allow students the opportunity to add, subtract, and compare larger numbers. Lastly, understanding the value of money is very important for my students. Being able to see and touch realistic money will help my students learn how to count money.
For the last couple years my school has not made it's Annual Yearly Progress goal.
Last year as a school we only had 28% of the students meet the math goal. As a school we are trying to brainstorm ideas of how we can improve this number. I believe with your support we can start increasing this percent and become great mathematicians.
