My Students

I teach a group of struggling readers who have developed a love for Gothic literature after studying multiple works in American literature written by Edgar Allen Poe and Washington Irving. Their eyes lit up at the previews of "The Phantom of the Opera." Being able to see a play on Broadway may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some of them. Located in Queens these students come from a diverse background. We are a Title I school which means most of our students come from low-income backgrounds. The class population consists of students with disabilities and English language learners. For these students to come together and share this common experience will truly leave a long-lasting impact.

My Project

We are located in a Title I school where all our students come from low-income households. Working with a group of struggling readers, (some students with disabilities, some English language learners, and some who just do not like to read) was quite a challenge until they discovered the love for Gothic literature. Students have analyzed short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe and Washington Irving, and are very excited to read their first play for the year “The Phantom of the Opera."

To see the play will change their lives!

Many have never seen a live play, let alone a Broadway show. They will be able to see the text come to life, and I hope to grow their love for reading for a lifetime.
