My Students

Do you drink water? Do you own a re-usable water bottle? We want our students to consider these questions and other parts of water usage through a mathematical lens. We are sharing our understanding with the community with Water Bottle Art, and we plan to give all students their own water bottle.

My students are all experiencing high school for at least the second time.

My school is a transfer high school in an urban city. The students have all experienced previous educational setting that were not beneficial to them. They come to our school with various needs and we use an alternate approach to learning to help them re-engage with our school community values and norms.

My Project

Having access to clean water should be a right. Brita station and water fountains are available but hardly used. Why? They do not have the resources to have their own water bottles. I will be able to provide my students an alternative to spending money and accumulating waste by purchasing bottled water. It is also beneficial to their health! The water bottle will be handed out at a community Water Taste Test Event. This event will have student created Water Bottle Art.

My teaching is designed to be engaging, and hands-on.

They will (probably for the first time) try to taste the difference between tap and bottled water. They will use mathematics in an authentic way! Hopefully, students will take on the challenge of using their own water bottles to better themselves and the planet.
