My Students

As a teacher in a lower-income school district, with approximately 50% of parents facing financial hardship, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. I teach a self-contained bridge class that consists of thirteen 4th & 5th grade students with special needs. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences through the use of technology, which they would otherwise not experience outside of the classroom.

My students are unique in many ways...They are creative, clever, and love technology!

They like to move, they love to read, and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while still providing exciting educational opportunities.

My Project

This small class of students will be using block based code using Scratch from MIT as an alternative presentation method during our upcoming American Revolution PBL that integrates Computer Science. The Chromebooks you fund will give my students the opportunity to use Google Classroom. They will be used during group collaboration collecting research, organizing information using Google Docs , writing scripts in Scratch, and importing backgrounds. Students will have the opportunity to share their work digitally with the rest of the school community and further their 21st Century presentation skills. Having the Chromebooks available in our classroom will make it easier to complete assignments, practice our coding skills, and give these students new opportunities to learn through technology. Opportunities they may not have at home.
