My Students

My English Language Arts and Theatre Arts students are the inaugural class of our new Magnet school focused on Design Learning. They and their families were willing to take a risk by attending our newly minted school located in an underserved, urban area in South Los Angeles. We are a Title 1 school with most of our students receiving Federally-funded, free breakfast and lunch.

Many of my students have below basic reading levels and deal with outside obstacles that make it difficult to learn.

Research tells us that middle school is the time when most students will decide to stay in school or drop out. With so many challenges, it can be difficult to convince students that education is the answer to a better life, which makes it difficult to close the ever-widening achievement gap.

Despite all this, my students have taken a leap of faith in their teachers and the program we are offering, and enter my classroom inspired to learn. My promise to them is that we will make beautiful and important work together this year. I'm hoping that you can help me to keep that promise by encouraging them to do their best.

My Project

I have established collaborative literacy groups in my classroom with a positive behavior support system that holds students accountable to each other. Students work together in small groups to earn points for categories such as; coming to class on time, completing their work, bringing their school supplies, doing their homework, and consistently demonstrating positive and respectful behavior. Student groups are rewarded with raffle tickets for having the most points on a bi-weekly basis. When students find out that the grand prize is something truly exciting, they get excited; which in turn translates to higher motivation levels in the classroom. In middle school, when students choose a path they will likely follow later in high school, a shot at the grand prize could make all of the difference between graduating or dropping out.

In order to keep my students motivated, I am requesting two Google Chromebooks (one for each semester) as fantastic prizes for my positive behavior reward system.

Your help will ensure that these students succeed and become one less statistic in the drop out rate.
