My Project

Though we haven't met yet, I already know that I want my students to recognize our classroom as a calm, comforting, and fun place to be. Some days students have a rough start to their day-- some have frantic mornings, and some may not get to our room entirely ready for the academic, paper and pencil demands of the day. Unlike traditional morning work, where students must be "on" the moment they walk through the classroom door, soft start activities allow students to choose how they will start their day and activities can be completed independently by all students. Students can choose from a variety of activities based on their interests and/or how they are feeling that day. Some days they may choose to build with LEGOS or magnetic tiles, while other days they may prefer to use markers and color in a large wall mandala or use Play-Doh to make their own unique creation.

Soft start activities will provide students with natural opportunities to build independence, use problem-solving skills, and enhance their social, emotional well being and also gives them an opportunity to settle in and prepare their bodies and minds for the academic demands ahead of them.

Soft starts will enable students to begin their days less rushed and anxious and this will enhance the overall tone of our classroom; making both learning and teaching more enjoyable and rewarding.
