Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students are first or second-generation Americans. Some are learning to read English for the first time. Others are just turned off to reading because of the difficulties they have with it or their inability to find interesting books. Reading is not a priority in many of their households and many students don't even own a library card. The only exposure they have to reading is in my classroom. This is a major reason why I prioritize trying to foster a love for reading in my classroom.

My students need to see reading as something that is fun.

Creating an environment where reading is engaging and more interactive will make students excited to come to class and to read together.

My Project

Finding books that are not considered by the students to be "old," "boring," or "ugh" is always a challenge. We're competing with the fast-paced world of social media and the short, immediacy of apps like Tik Tok. My students need books that are meaningful to them - books that will engage and inspire them. I have hand-selected book titles that I know will make my students passionate about reading time.

The titles are all engaging and are popular choices for the students in my school.

These stories have engaging plots that can easily capture a student's interest and show that that reading does not have to be a chore. I've also included titles that will help foster social and emotional growth among my students- something that we, as a school, have made a priority for all students. At this middle school age, learning to deal with changing relationships and emotions can be very difficult. Hopefully, reading advice and shared stories from other teens can make a difference in the way my students view themselves.

The magic of a good book is only steps away.
