My Students

Many of my students experience extreme poverty. Many have difficulty coming to school for complex reasons often out of the child's control. I serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and various learning disabilities.

The typical students in my class struggle with basic math and reading skills.

This year, I had over a third of my class receiving special services. I have 30 fourth graders, and 12 of these students needed additional support services. Because my students have complex and difficult lives, I need to provide emotional and physical comfort and support to help them learn and grow. Six hours a day is long when a young person is struggling with overwhelming problems.

I love these students. I love the fact I am the rock in their lives. I am here for them when so much in their lives are in transition and turmoil. When these students are given love, empathy, and structure, they grow. It is their growth that gives me the hope to face the world every day.

My Project

I have many reluctant readers and graphic novels add the amazing pictures and formats that kids need to help them through a text.

This means the greatest feature of graphic novels is how easily and quickly a student can read them.

With short, snappy dialogue interspersed with longer text and beautiful images, the student can absorb a story much faster when they read it in graphic novel form.

These books tend to be particularly captivating for kids because the combination of text and pictures provides context for stories that they may otherwise not completely understand.
