I teach a group of curious first graders in the Chinatown area of San Francisco. About 78% of the students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch and 72 % of the students are English-language learners. Teaching and working in an inner-city school is a challenge. I am requesting an ice cream maker as a tool for my science unit. My students will be studying the various stages of how liquids can transform into solids and vice versa. Among other experiments, it would be great for the students to be able to invent their own ice cream flavors and observe the combination of liquids and solids. Of course the final product will be edible. Imagine their expressions as they observe the ingredients within the ice cream maker as well as when they consume their final product. Finally, they will record, illustrate, and describe their experiences. These experiences will also include measurements, guessing, and predictions. This will be hands on experience that they will remember for years to come. Thank you for your support and help in providing this resource for my classroom.
