Cozy nooks and lots of books are two things that make my students joyful! We love to read and do so every, single day, simply for the pure joy of it.
Located in North Buffalo, my students come from many different home situations, backgrounds and cultures, but one thing they all have in common is a love of reading.
They are inquisitive, bright, responsible, children who are kind and work hard. We spend a portion of every day reading books we choose and getting lost in our own adventures.
I teach ELA and writing, so I see 40 voracious readers a day who would love new books, flashlights for our Flashlight Friday days and comfy seating so they can snuggle up with their book and get lost.
My Project
New books will continue to enhance the literature-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really beg to be in. We have crew meetings there, I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
Once a month, we are treated to Flashlight Friday- we wear our pj's, bring a blanket or pillow, pull down the blinds and read with our flashlights.
This has been an incredibly easy way to entice students to get excited about reading. Sadly, I do not have enough flashlights and the ones I purchased at the dollar store keep breaking. A whole new set would be incredible!
In a classroom with many students who have difficulty sitting still, flexible seating is vital for learning. We work around the room in groups, independently, and read there. It would be so nice to have more options because it's hard to get comfortable and read while sitting on a hard, concrete floor.
