Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 5th grade teacher in Emeryville, who strongly believes that field trips enrich student learning and retention of information. I am very lucky to have a wonderful group of students who are curious, investigative, and love to ask tons of questions.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.

We are a Title I school and all of our students qualify for free school lunch. I am proud to be a part of the Emery Unified School district where inclusion for students with special needs is celebrated.

I have organized a wonderful opportunity for my students to use their investigative skills in an overnight field trip where they will experience what life was life during the Gold Rush in California.

My Project

I am a firm believer that when it comes to learning the best way to experience and retain information is through hands-on project based learning. My students will be experiencing the impact of the California Gold Rush on California's History by participating in an overnight trip where they will pan for gold and enter a tent town that reenacts what life was like during the Gold Rush. They will also learn life skills like working in teams, preparing food, cleaning, and hiking.

Columbia Diggins, Where our overnight trip will take place, represents a Gold Rush Tent Town that sprang up to serve the needs of the Miners who rushed to the California foothills.

The merchant economy that developed from “mining the pockets of the miners” was a big part of the development of California, and offered a golden opportunity for many merchants. The requested materials will allow my students to indulge in this experience and to learn first hand how important the Gold Rush was to the diversity that we currently have in California. I am sure that this will build a rich and exceptional learning experience that my students will value for many years to come.
