I teach Kindergarten in the middle of New York City. We will be doing a unit on animals in the spring. Last year we had an organization fund us privately so that we could go to "Green Meadows Farm" in Queens. This experience is hands on, unique, fun, and filled with learning. The exposure to the farm animals for my children is priceless, especially as most of them have never been to a farm or participated in any activity of this sort. At Green Meadows Farm, the children get to go on a hayride, feed goats, pick up chickens, milk a cow, and observe different farm animals in a safe and fun environment. We are also doing an animal study for which each student picks an animal and writes a "non-fiction" book of interesting facts. Green Meadows will provide them the stimulus for their further study. We would like to take this year's class, except it costs 8.50 per student. We can get the bus for free, but I am hesitant to ask the parents for that kind of money for a trip, as all of the children are on free lunch, and it is very difficult for families to provide money for trips. I do not want to plan a trip which would leave some of the students behind. The trip to the farm will be enlightening and they will remember it forever. There are 75 children and approximately 25 adults (parents and teachers) going on the trip.
