Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school in a colorful neighborhood with a diverse population. Many of our students come from low-income families and are emergent bilinguals. Given those circumstances, there is a need among our students for supplies in order to give them an equitable opportunity to engage with and be active participants in Distance Learning.

The third grade students at our elementary school are bright, resilient, caring, and curious children.

Students at our school treasure the safe and empowering community we have collaboratively built. As an official International Baccalaureate and STEAM school, we encompass the whole-child learning approach. It is an inquiry based, student centered program where students work collaboratively to solve problems. We want to make sure that they can continue this type of unique experience while learning from home.

My Project

My students are about to embark on an educational journey called “Distance Learning.” As a result of these unprecedented circumstances, all of my students will become third graders for the first time from their home. As we navigate these uncharted waters, I hope to provide them with the supplies and materials they need to get the full third grade experience.

My hope is that these learning kits will give all students the equity and access they need to be successful during these difficult times.

In order to help my students feel empowered, providing the same home learning tools is essential. My students deserve to have the best educational experience possible even if it means staying home. These supplies will engage students while making our IB/STEAM activities come to life, and give them a break from the computer. With these supplies, my students will be able to participate during our synchronous lessons by taking notes, and showing their thinking in concrete ways. They would also benefit by using these tools during their asynchronous time to complete projects and assignments that are assigned as homework. Also, the binders, dividers, and pencil boxes will help keep their work organized and ready for easy retrieval when needed.
