My Project
Our school services students from eighth grade through their completion of high school. Our students present with multiple disabilities. Our school focuses on vocational training to promote skills the students will need to both obtain and maintain a job.
To address the physical and cognitive challenges each student faces, the staff has created a number of vocational training programs that include a bake shop, coffee shop, gardening, and a school-wide recycling and composting center.
The efficacy of instruction is increased when lessons are presented in a multidisciplinary, thematic, and functional way. Our students benefit from utilizing concrete objects, adapted learning materials, and equipment as well as by tackling daily living challenges. In a Science-themed unit celebrating the locavore movement, our students will learn to use garden tools to plant a variety of vegetables throughout the year in the greenhouse. The vegetables will be used in our class cooking exercises. Meal planning and preparation will be addressed in Math. The concept of conservation will be introduced and reinforced through the setup and maintenance of a class compost bin, vermicompost, and outdoor bins.
Despite their disabilities, our students are exceptional and inspiring. They come to school with enthusiasm to learn. Our class will immerse and engage students in community-oriented and age-appropriate learning activities that promote the conservation of the earth and sustainable living practices. The use of these equipment will build a foundation in functional skills and serve to enhance cognitive development and emotional well-being in students.
