My Students

My students love to learn and love to protect the environment in the process. What better way to do both than by using dry erase boards in the classroom?

My students are a part of the NYSAA (New York State Alternate Assessment) program known as ACES.

These amazing students are a low functioning population amongst the larger special education population. Many of my students, though in high school, cannot read beyond a 1st grade level. As a Social Studies and Reading teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. It is a challenge to keep them interested in a topic for long periods of time, so many of our topics are extended over many weeks. They are a part of a work study program as well. They gain both life skills and academics in one place. This helps them to gain a better sense of life after they leave our program. They have the opportunity to stay in this program until they are 21, meaning many of my students will be with me for 8 years. This also causes a challenge because granted many of them do not retain info for that long, and I must recreate the curriculum each year.

My Project

My students enjoy learning and are also very environmentally aware. They are always thinking of ways we can protect the world around us. I often create review games for my class. Since they love to compete with one another, they are often a big hit. However many of my students are shy and do not like to speak up in class or during these games. I also have a student who is very bright, however she is a mute. Having these dry erase boards in my class will allow many more of my students to participate in these review games without having to speak in front of the class. These boards will also help me to assess my students more often to see if they need help in any area. Many of my students are too shy to ask for help, this way I can offer it with more of a concrete direction without them having to ask for it.

The funding of this project will help so many of my students on their learning journey and even help save many trees along the way.

My students love coming to class to learn, and using the dry erase boards would add a new level of fun along their journey.
