Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students attend an urban Title I middle school in Chattanooga that is brimming with brilliant students who face incredible obstacles to their success. These bright-eyed students are full of vim and vigor every day and work hard to grow as scholars. Unfortunately, almost all of my students have grown up in low-income settings and attended schools situated in concentrated poverty. As a result, almost every students lacks the basic literacy skills necessary for them to become professionally and personally successful in the workplace and broader society.

Nevertheless, they are an inspiring bunch who are readily energized by the challenges they face and strive for success.

They care deeply--about their future prospects, about their families and, about their community. They want to become successful in school and beyond. And with your help, they will be!

My Project

Books have the power to change lives. Not every student realizes that, but if I am able to expand my classroom library, I will be able to place a great book in each of my students’ hands, see their eyes widen with excitement, and know that their lives have forever been changed.

The problem is that I do not have enough books in my library at the moment.

Many of my books are tattered and worn, published years or even decades ago. They do not represent my students’ interests or experiences. So they sit on the shelves, collecting dust, semester after semester.

New books would make all the difference. Each of the books I hope to purchase will captivate my students with characters and a story that connects to their lives. The right text can hook a student, draw him or her into the world of literature, and propel him or her into a lifelong love affair with books. These books have the potential to do just that.

With these books, my students will have the opportunity in class to apply news skills and strategies to stories they relate to. They will be able to dialogue with their peers about themes and deeper meanings. They will grow their comprehension and reading levels. My students could also use graphic novels in an interdisciplinary STEM project with math and our VWelab to foster understanding of statistics and design thinking. But, most importantly, they will be able to curl up every day with a book they love and just read.
