Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious; from studious to silly; from spoiled to neglected; from being treasured to traumatized.

The pandemic has hit them hard: their natural exuberance has taken a hit because they are isolated from their friends and teachers.

Many of them are developing anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal can't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they are currently experiencing. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well. Although I can't solve these problems, I can do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and focus on better days ahead.

My Project

After more than 10 years spent teaching English, I started teaching computer science two years ago. I've been hooked ever since! I have taken training with Code and Firia Labs, familiarizing myself with Python, Java, and HTML so I can bring those skills to my middle-school students. I've had emergency credentials for the past two years while taking the required classes and passing the single-subject teaching exams, so now I just need to get my full credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Can you help me out? The full credential costs $100 and will last for five years. I really appreciate any help you can provide so that I can continue teaching CS in our school! Thanks for your consideration!
