My Students

I teach a very large student body at my school (1000+ students). I gratefully serve daily as their enthusiastic music specialist. My students are comprised of a diverse and eclectic mix of cultures and socioeconomic classes spanning all ages and all stages of academic achievement. They stand as a beautiful celebration of the human spirit and diversity! Through music, my students creatively explore ways to communicate who they are, where they have come from, and share points of light from the journey they are taking. Henry Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage." In my classes that is certainly the case!

Music provides me with a wonderful opportunity to help my students develop a healthy sense of self and community through creatively integrated experiences that enhance their ability to learn and grow.

It gives them what they believe is a fun "break" from learning when in fact, they are learning and growing continually as they perform, play, and create in my classroom!

My Project

I can't wait to introduce my students to the magic of reading music with these brightly colored bells! Bells have appeal for all ages but these are particularly versatile because they can be used as desk bells or hand bells and that makes them easily mastered by very young children as well as older ones. In my music class, there are levels of rhythmic and iconic notation skills that build beginning in Kindergarten. Using iconic notation to help kids read music such as a colored bell provides young musicians with a means of performing without the overwhelming experience of deciphering traditional notation on a staff. They quickly master simple melodies and harmonies and play along with my originally composed or arranged background music for a very motivating and impressive performance. All in all, the experience provides children with opportunities to collaborate, learn, master, grow and focus on creating something beautiful while simultaneously building self confidence. Not only are these bells an amazing musical resource for younger students, but they are also invaluable for older ones as well. Creating and performing songs where melodies are accompanied by beautiful harmonies is a wonderful accomplishment for older students. The benefits for them are the same as for younger students, but with higher level thinking involved. Just imagine grade level programs and a Christmas program with these beautiful instruments!

These hand bells will prove to be an invaluable resource for my music program to help students learn to read music, collaborate and practice for performances, while developing greater confidence in their individual abilities.

If this wish is fulfilled, there will be enough handbells for each student to be able to play along at whatever ability level they are at which makes this project one that all of my students can "sink their teeth into"!
