We are a public, all-girls, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) middle and high school in Los Angeles, California. We opened in 2016 with grades 6 and 9, and grow a grade per year to eventually become a full SPAN (grades 6-12) school by the 2019-20 school year.
Our students come from 79 zip codes throughout Los Angeles, and over half receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Did you know that girls within the Los Angeles Unified School District perform at the same level or above their male peers in math and science while in elementary school? And yet, their scores on standardized tests in math and science decline as they progress through middle and high school. Not only that, as students move through school fewer girls take STEM classes than boys.
Our school is here to change that, and our girls need your help! We welcome all girls within the school district who are committed to a highly rigorous, college preparatory curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
The students I teach are excited about math and run to class daily to grab one of the few calculators in the room. Those who are not fortunate to have a calculator on test days are left to use a multiplication chart that hangs on the wall or resort to using their fingers.
I want my students to have the calculators they need to solve multi-step equations with ease.
My students will be taught how to solve equations by using several keys combined which will eliminate calculation errors. Additionally, some problems are less difficult to solve when using a calculator such as finding the square root of a number or using sine, cosine, and tangent to find angle measurements. The girls need the ability to demonstrate mastery on several key concepts and having a calculator is essential to their success.
Many of the girls are not able to purchase the calculators they need for school, and I would like them to arrive at school knowing that their classroom is equipped with the calculators they need for learning. Thank you for helping us get the required primary tool in any math class, a calculator.
